Is estate planning expensive? E-mail

Estate planning does not need to be expensive. Generally, most families can have their estate planning provided, including wills, powers of attorney, health care directives, and perhaps trust documents, for under a thousand dollars. Wills alone are very inexpensive, and will in most cases cost approximately $100.00 for simple wills. Estate planning is not just about wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, though. If you are a shareholder or partner in a privately-held business, you should have a buy-sell agreement in place. Otherwise, your family may have difficulties in obtaining sufficient income from your investment.

The cost of failing to undertake estate planning is far higher than any legal fees that you may incur. Assets may be distributed to heirs who do not need or deserve them. Children may receive income or assets at an age at which they are not prepared or able to handle the responsibility that comes with managing money. The Court may appoint a guardian for your children that you would not approve of.
